The Ultimate Guide to Pet-Nat wines
It's a grey area for some, and a way of life for others. Made all over the world in a variety of styles and methods, Pet-Nats really are about as natural as it gets in the wine world.
But What Are They?
Pétillant Naturel, or Pét-Nat, is a naturally sparkling wine made using the méthode ancestrale, the oldest known way of producing bubbles in wine. Unlike traditional Champagne, which undergoes a secondary fermentation with added sugar and yeast, Pét-Nat wines are bottled before fermentation is complete, trapping natural carbonation. This results in a lightly sparkling, unfiltered, and often slightly cloudy wine with vibrant, fresh, and unpredictable flavours. Typically lower in alcohol and made with minimal intervention, Pét-Nats are beloved for their rustic charm, lively effervescence, and wide range of styles, from crisp and citrusy to funky and floral.
